TRAVEL GUIDE

İçeriden bilgiler.

Must Do

  • Book Machu Picchu tickets and train weeks ahead; the quota is limited.
  • Give the first 1-2 days to Cusco for altitude, don't go straight high.
  • Tour the Sacred Valley (Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Maras salt terraces).

Avoid These

  • Heavy activity or alcohol on day one; altitude sickness is serious.
  • Trying Machu Picchu without a ticket; there are no sales at the gate.
  • Untreated water and ice served on the street.

Tips

  • The Boleto Turístico is a combined ticket for the Sacred Valley sites.
  • The train (from Ollantaytambo) is the practical way to Machu Picchu; the Inca Trail needs a permit.
  • Ask your doctor about altitude pills (acetazolamide) before you travel.

Hidden Gems

  • Palccoyo instead of Rainbow Mountain: the same coloured peaks, a quarter of the crowd.
  • The upper terraces of San Blas: an empty city view at sunset.
  • Maras-Moray: salt terraces plus a circular Inca agricultural lab.
