Austria: frequently asked questions

When should I visit Austria?
For city tours, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal. For winter sports and Christmas markets, December-March; the Advent season in Salzburg and Vienna is magical.
Is Austria expensive?
It's at Western European standards; pricier than Turkey but cheaper than Switzerland. The mid-range daily budget is around $90-130 per person. Shopping at supermarkets and transit cards lower the cost.
Can I visit Vienna-Salzburg-Hallstatt on the same trip?
Yes, it's very practical thanks to the train network. Vienna-Salzburg is ~2.5 hours by fast train; Salzburg to Hallstatt is ~2.5 hours by bus/train. A 5-7 day route covers all three comfortably.
How is transport in Austria?
The ÖBB train network is wide, punctual and comfortable. City metro-tram-bus is excellent; Vienna's 24/48/72-hour transit cards are good value. Villages like Hallstatt need a bus+ferry combination.
