Japan: frequently asked questions

When should I visit Japan?
Late March-early April for the sakura, and November for autumn colours (koyo) are the most beautiful periods — but both are crowded and expensive. May is a hidden favourite: green, mild, fewer tourists. January-February is for skiing and the cheapest time.
Is Japan expensive?
Not as much as people think. Food is surprisingly affordable (ramen $6-10, konbini meals are good quality); the real costs are transport and accommodation. The mid-range daily budget is around $120-180 per person.
Should I buy a Japan Rail Pass?
If you'll visit multiple cities (like Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka) and use the Shinkansen, it's usually worth it; but since the price has risen, you need to calculate your route and compare. For a single-city focus, it's unnecessary.
How many days for Tokyo and Kyoto?
4-5 days for Tokyo and 3-4 days for Kyoto is ideal. The two are ~2.5 hours apart by Shinkansen. For a first visit, the 10-14 day Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka triangle is a classic, balanced route.
Do you tip in Japan?
No — there's no tipping culture in Japan; it can even cause confusion or discomfort. Service is already excellent; a thank-you is enough.
How is the SIM/internet in Japan?
There are tourist SIM/eSIM vending machines at the airport; eSIMs like Ubigi and Airalo are the most practical. Since foreigners can't open a line with a local number, tourist packages or pocket wifi are preferred.
