The nerves before your first trip abroad are normal; these 15 points are a shortcut past the mistakes everyone makes the first time.
Before you go
- 1. Passport validity: Most countries require 6 months' validity from your return date. That's the first check.
- 2. Digital copies of documents: Passport, visa, insurance — keep them on your phone AND in the cloud.
- 3. Set up your bank: Is your card enabled for international use? Set a virtual-card limit.
- 4. Learn the country's plug: A universal adapter is a cheap lifesaver.
- 5. Arrive early at the airport: 3 hours ahead the first time; passport control plus a margin for the unknown.
Money matters
- 6. Where to exchange currency: The airport has the worst rate; leave with a small amount and withdraw the rest from a bank ATM in the city.
- 7. The DCC trap: If an ATM/POS asks "would you like to pay in your home currency?" always say no — choose the local currency and save 5-10%.
- 8. Split your money: Main card + backup card + some cash, in three separate places.
On the ground
- 9. The official way from airport to city: Head for signposted public transport or an app-based ride, not the people shouting "taxi? taxi?"
- 10. Download an offline map: Save the city offline in Google Maps; you'll find your way even without internet.
- 11. Take the hotel's card: Keep the address in the local language in your pocket; showing it to a driver is easier than talking.
- 12. Know the classic scams: "Free bracelet," "dropped ring," "the museum is closed, let me take you," petition-signers — all members of the same family. Smile, walk on.
Attitude
- 13. Fill 70% of your schedule: The best memories land in the gaps in your plan.
- 14. Learn five words: Hello, thank you, please, yes, no. They open doors.
- 15. Try a cheap city first: For a first experience, capitals like Belgrade, Sofia, Athens or Budapest — both close and affordable — are ideal; the cost of budget mistakes stays low.
