FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Croatia: frequently asked questions

When should I visit Croatia?
May-June and September-October are ideal: warm sea, reasonable crowds and prices. July-August is the hottest, most crowded and most expensive period; Dubrovnik becomes unwalkable on cruise-ship days.
Is Croatia expensive?
Dubrovnik is expensive (Western European level); Split and inland areas are more affordable. The mid-range daily budget is around $70-130 per person. Accommodation prices rise sharply in high season.
Dubrovnik or Split?
Dubrovnik for the walls, medieval atmosphere and Game of Thrones; Split for a living Roman palace, an island base and lower prices. Ideally combine both and stop at the islands in between (Hvar, Korčula).
How do you avoid the cruise crowds in Dubrovnik?
Check the cruise schedule; the Old Town is unwalkable on ship days. Walk the walls at opening (before the ship passengers arrive); evening hours are calmer too.
